Bob Mitchard said, “Investment in this development by Dr Sheen and Partners and Caerphilly Local Health Board underlines the long term commitment to the local population in Bargoed and the surrounding area and puts in place a range of clinical facilities that will support the Welsh Assembly Government Strategic aims outlined in Designed for Life – with surgery premises allowing a wider range of services to be provided to people in their local community. I know the practice is rightly proud of its new surgery facilities.”
The new building has been developed and is owned by Matrix Medical, a specialist investor in primary care premises. It has been built on behalf of Bryntirion Surgery and will enable them to offer a full range of clinical services and a new minor surgeries unit. It will also accommodate community staff, including district nurses, health visitors and midwives.
The purpose-built facility, located at the top of West Street approximately 1363sq m (14,671sq.ft.) and Matrix Medical has also incorporated in-built expansion space for future use together with 70 car spaces for both staff and patients. The medical centre has been built on the former Bargoed Mining Institute Technical College which was subsequently converted to a primary school. The land was made available by the site owners, Caerphilly County Borough Council.
A delighted Dr Wisbey said: "We are very excited that we have a new building which will offer modern purpose-built medical facilities to over 8,500 patients, who have all been very supportive. We now hope to be able to expand the medical services available to utilise the building to its full potential. The practice would like to thank all those who have helped us with this project, especially the Project Managers, Contractors and staff at Caerphilly Local Health Board."
Clive Williams, Senior Service Development Manager (Primary Care) for Caerphilly Local Health Board, said: "The premises have been designed to incorporate the present and future expansion needs of primary care to ensure services are provided to patients. This will be an excellent facility for patients in the Bargoed area”
Jehu Construction constructed the storey building, working with Matrix Medical’s architects, Bundred & Goode.
Alistair Blacklaws, Joint Managing Director of Birmingham based Matrix Medical, said: "We are delighted to see this project completed. Every development has its issues – here we had the added complications of demolition and the relocation of bats. The roof void is now one big bat cave!”
